More than 11,000 cases of tuberculosis were reported last year in Mombasa District, up from the 2,000 in the early 1990s, a senior medical officer has announced.
Coast provincial TB and leprosy coordinator Hajara El-Busaidy said TB cases have been on the increase in the past five years because of poverty and poor sanitation.
“Statistics indicate that about 2,000 cases were reported in the early 1990s but the latest report shows that more than 11,455 patients were treated at different health centres within Mombasa District last year,” said Dr El-Busaidy.
Speaking at the Coast Provincial General Hospital during the launch of a TB and HIV steering committee, Dr El-Busaidy said the majority of infected people were aged between 20 and 30 years.
Awareness
She said the committee would oversee the implementation of TB and HIV collaborative activities.
“The disease has increased in Mombasa significantly because of mushrooming of slum dwellings but we have set up a committee of experts to create awareness at grassroots level on how to prevent and cure the disease,” she said.
The doctor said there were only two multi-drug-resistant (MDR) centres in Kenya and that the Government was planning to build one in Coast Province “because we have recorded an increasing number of MDR patients at our hospitals”.
“MDR centres at Eldoret and Kenyatta hospitals are not adequate to treat patients whose infections are resistant to drugs,” she said.
