About MGAC Outreach
This workshop was originally researched, written, and implemented by members of the High School and Community Outreach Initiative of the McGill Global AIDS Coalition beginning in the summer of 2005. We set out to create an approximately one-hour workshop that would help Montréal-area high school students understand the broader social, political, and economic impacts of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Additionally, we hoped to empower students with information and tools that would allow them to take action. Our challenge was to design something that could make such a far-away problem real to Canadian youth. The strategy we settled on is one of simulation and role-playing. Workshop participants are essentially transformed into a community in rural Zambia. Each individual receives a profile that highlights their role in the village and their relation to HIV/AIDS – whether they are infected or affected by the virus. Through a series of scenarios, the group tracks the direct impacts of the disease on individuals’ lives, as well as its wider repercussions on the village. These scenarios will focus on HIV/AIDS’ impact a family, on Zambia’s education and health systems, and access to AIDS treatment. Facilitated by workshop presenters, participants will be encouraged to identify and discuss the consequences of each scenario. Finally, participants will be left with practical strategies for taking action against HIV/AIDS, such as peer-education, letter writing, and fundraising.
